This month Parliament’s Education Service is getting competitive!
From 6 January 2014 entries can be submitted to our Lights, Camera, Parliament! competition which asks young people aged 7-16 to tell Parliament what new law they would introduce in the UK in a short film, script or storyboard. The competition website offers great resources for young people and teachers, including lesson plans, technical tips and templates and all the previous entries to help participants prepare their entries. You’ll also find regularly updated inspiration pieces and blogs which young people have already been busy commenting on, sharing their views on education, crime and getting their voice heard as they start to think about what law they would make.
The closing date for entries is 14 February 2014 and this year’s winners will be invited to an awards day including a tour of Parliament, an opportunity to speak to Members about their law and a showcasing event for all the winning entries at the British Film Institute.
On 13 January 2014, the fifth annual Speaker’s School Council Awards launches. We want School Councils to tell us about a school or student council project that has made a difference in their school or community. Big or small, it doesn’t matter; what matters is that the School Council’s efforts led to a positive change. For more information on the competition and how to enter, check out the Speakers School Council Awards website you can also find details of previous years’ winners.
This year winners will be invited to Parliament to attend an awards ceremony in the Speaker’s Apartments where they will be presented with a trophy by Mr Speaker. All School Councils that enter will receive a certificate for taking part and a web badge that can be displayed on their school websites to celebrate their hard work. The Speaker’s School Council Awards is open to all schools and colleges across the UK, winning projects will be chosen from four age categories: Infant (4-7); Junior (7-11); Secondary (11-16) and Young Adult (16-19). The closing date for entries is 30 April 2014.
We would welcome your assistance in promoting our competitions to young people, schools and youth groups in your local area. If you would like more information, please contact the Education Service on 020 7219 5207 or firstname.lastname@example.org
