Suspicious packages alert

Added: 9 June 2005

On Thursday afternoon 9 June the Deputy Serjeant at Arms issued a security announcement.  For those of you who haven't accessed your parliamentary email you may have missed this:

"The Post Office detected last night two white envelopes addressed to Government Ministers in the House of Commons which contained a mixture of sugar and weed killer.

While every effort will be made to detect suspicious packages before delivery, Members and their staff are reminded to take appropriate precautions in handling mail, particularly as regards packages which are unexpected or may give other cause for concern.  Advice is provided on page 7 of the Emergency Section of the Palace of Westminster telephone book.

In the event of a suspect package please contact 3333 immediately."

If you work away from the parliamentary estate and receive a suspicious package, alert your local police immediately.  If your office doesn't already have contingency plans in place with your local police to deal with incidents such as this.....then contact them now and discuss appropriate arrangements.
