Unsolicited e-mails from Google Groups

Added 16 April 2008

Several MPs and staff have been receiving numerous unsolicited e-mails from Google Groups, because the Group managers have added them to their groups without asking permission first.

Fear not, you can put a stop to it quite easily.

First of all, if you are receiving e-mails from Google Groups, then you must have a Google account.  So, go to http://groups.google.com/ and sign in.

Next, click on the link marked 'Manage my membership' - you'll find this link on the right hand side of the screen, hidden amongst other text.

You will then see two boxes, marked:

  • 'Do not allow group managers to invite me to their groups'

and

  • 'Do not allow group managers to directly add me to their groups.'

You should tick one or both of these boxes, as appropriate, and then click the button marked 'save my invitation preferences'.

Next, look underneath 'membership settings', and you will see a list of the groups to which you are subscribed.

For each group you wish to leave, click on the third drop-down box and select 'unsubscribe', and then save your preferences again.

You can now sign out and your problem will be resolved.
