Unite Caseworker of the Year Awards

Added 17 April 2008

W4MP welcomes TGWU/Unite's decision to set up a Caseworker of the Year Award.  Researchers already have similar awards (see: www.w4mp.org/html/eni/2008q1/20080208_researcher.asp) so we encourage you to get nominating.

Anyone can nominate a caseworker for the award so click here for the nomination form and when you’ve completed it send it to Kevin Flack, c/o Angela E Smith MP, House of Commons, SW1A 0AA or by email to flackk@parliament.uk.   The deadline is 1 June 2008.

The awards will be presented at a reception in the Attlee Suite between 6pm and 8pm on Thursday 3 July 2008. If you’d like to come to the reception on 3 July, email Branch Chair, Dan Whittle, at whittled@parliament.uk.

More information from TGWU/Unite below.

One of our branch’s next initiatives to promote the important role of caseworkers is the first Caseworker of the Year Awards.

Look out for this letter being sent to your MP:

Unite Caseworker of the Year Awards

We write to you as Chair and Secretary of the Unite Parliamentary Staff Branch to invite you to nominate your Caseworker(s) in our Caseworker of the Year competition. The Branch has set aside £1,000 to fund the event including prizes, and the winner will be announced at a reception to be held in the Attlee Suite, Portcullis House from 6pm to 8pm on Thursday 3 July.

We are asking MPs and others to nominate Caseworkers for their work for individuals and communities. We believe that Caseworkers do a fantastic public service and more needs to be done to highlight the positive work they do. Often the first port of call for desperate constituents, they work in the front line of service delivery. Caseworker pay scales start at what we consider below a reasonable living wage: £13,082 (provinces) to £18,067 (London).

The judges are Jack Dromey, Deputy General Secretary of the Transport and General Workers Union; Times Political Correspondent Greg Hurst; Chairman of the Secretaries and Assistants Council Pat Fea, PLP Secretary Martin O'Donovan and Kevin Flack Secretary of the Unite Staff Branch.

Please fill in the attached form which gives space for a summary of your Caseworker’s achievements. You may want to provide specific details of a particularly difficult case, instead or as well as general information about this person’s work. Caseworkers cannot nominate themselves but nominations are welcomed from co-workers, other MPs and organisations outside Parliament. There is no limit on the number of nominations an individual can receive and more nomination forms are available from Kevin Flack. Please use the contact details below:  c/o Angela E Smith MP, House of Commons, SW1A 0AA or by email to flackk@parliament.uk.

Also enclosed is a copy of EDM 1057 which calls on the House authorities to look at ways in which the branch could gain consultation rights so that it could have a say on matters such as terms and conditions. I hope that if you have not already signed it you will show your support for staff by doing so today.
