Latest update:

Update 7 December 2010

I'm organising a focus group on Friday December 10th at 3pm at the London School of Economics (on Aldwych). It's going to be an interactive discussion on the unpaid intern guesthouse I plan to create. I aim to collect opinions about what participants expect to come out of the project and hear any suggestions they might have on how to make this project happen. Also, it would be great to meet those of you who are keen to get more involved in setting up this 'Intern Hub'.

If anyone is interested could they contact me asap on the following email address to confirm their attendance and I will provide the exact meeting place: m.bottero1@lse.ac.uk

Also the deadline for the completion of the survey (see below) is Monday 20 December. Click here to take survey now.

Unpaid internships

My name is Milena and I am writing about the injustice of unpaid internship; an injustice, because in my eyes working unpaid for 3 to 6 months, up to 5 days a week prevents young graduates from realising their full potential. It’s a simple case of supply and demand. There is a limited supply of internships and a huge demand from graduates, driving the working wage down to nothing. Because of the current economic climate, the financial situation of the not-for-profit sector is becoming increasingly difficult and many organisations prefer hiring unpaid interns on a rolling basis, every 3 to 6 months, rather than offering permanent (paid) vacancies.

Access to cheap food and accommodation

I am myself an unpaid intern at an international environmental organisation and am finding it difficult to cover my living cost in London. But I am determined to do something about this issue, to assist unpaid interns in making their way in the voluntary sector whilst encouraging them to network. I want to create a London Hub for unpaid interns, in other words a Central London guesthouse that would provide cheap food and accommodation for 10 to 15 unpaid interns working in the not-for-profit sector, for up to 6 months. This guesthouse would be partly funded through a fundraising campaign amongst the social enterprise sector.

Your help needed with a quick survey

I am now undertaking a research phase in order to explore the need for such a venture and to help me provide the best possible service to unpaid interns. It would thus be very helpful if you could complete the following survey, which will only take you a few minutes.

Your feedback and comments

I aim to tailor this project around the exact needs of unpaid interns and so your feedback is invaluable to me! If you are interested, and would like to get more information or simply give feedback, any comments are welcome! Please contact me on m.bottero1@lse.ac.uk
