Internships are regularly available in the Parliamentary Resources Unit (PRU), a pooled research facility for Conservative MPs and Peers. Each member of the 16-strong team specializes in particular government departments, providing briefings on Parliamentary business, general research and correspondence support.
Interns typically work alongside one or two of our departmental researchers and duties will mainly involve;
drafting policy-related correspondence replies from constituents;
preparing briefing notes ahead of Parliamentary debates;
completing research projects, as requested.
This opportunity is suitable for graduates looking to gain knowledge and experience of the working in both Houses of Parliament, with backbenchers and shadow ministers. A structured training programme is provided and, though not guaranteed, several of our previous interns have taken up paid positions as researchers for MPs, or joined the Unit full-time when vacancies arose.
The positions are based in the House of Commons and successful applicants need to be available full-time, Monday to Friday, 9:30-5:30, with reduced hours on Fridays and during Parliamentary recesses. Internships are expected to be around 3 months in duration. A daily incidental expenses allowance of £10 is provided.
The successful candidate must have:
a proven interest in UK domestic politics, ideally in one or two specific areas of policy;
strong organisational, writing and research skills;
good interpersonal skills and the ability to perform in a team;
willingness to write enthusiastically on behalf of Conservative MPs and Peers.
