The All Party Parliamentary Cycling Group is an all-party parliamentary subject group dedicated to disseminating knowledge, generating debate and facilitating engagement on cycling issues amongst Members of Parliament. The group does this by organising a busy programme of parliamentary meetings and briefings, and by campaigning on cycling issues.
The APPCG is looking for a Parliamentary Officer/Intern to provide research, press and administrative support. The post is part-time for one day a week and is based at Westminster. The successful applicant must be a keen and committed cyclist, who wants to work for a world with safer and better provision for cyclists.
Person Specification:
Essential:
An interest and commitment to cycling
A self-starter who can turn ideas into action.
Excellent written and oral communication skills in English
Numerate, with good IT skills
Knowledge of and interest in politics
Ability and confidence to deal with a wide range of people including senior government officials
Ability to work well under pressure
Good teamworker with organisational skills.
•Ability to respect confidentiality.
Desirable:
Regular cyclist.
Knowledge and experience of parliamentary procedure.
Experience of lobbying, advocacy and political campaigning.
Desk-top publishing skills.
Event management experience.
Job Description
Overall: To raise the profile of cycling issues within parliament, and influence government policy on cycling.
Specifically:
Planning, managing and implementing the APPCG plans including, shaping priority advocacy issues and identifying and approaching target audiences.
Strengthening a network of supportive Parliamentarians, and maintaining links with sponsors.
Keeping informed on cycling and briefing MPs and peers on developments in cycling.
Tracking and responding to the UK Government and European Union and other relevant parties.
Drafting parliamentary questions and early day motions, and assisting in tabling of debates in Parliament.
Arranging speaker meetings and other events.
Booking rooms and circulating invitations/agenda/minutes for APPCG meetings.
Establishing links and maintaining relations with other organisations, government departments, civil servants, NGOs.
Drafting of press releases and organisation of media events.
Maintenance of media database and contacts.
Responsibility for the APPCG website
Other duties as requested by the Chair and Officers of the Group.
Reporting to the Chair of the APPCG (Emily Thornberry MP).
