The Role
In the run up to the General Election, the RSPB wants to ensure that Parliamentary candidates are aware of and, ideally support, policies that will benefit the natural environment. We will be seeking meetings with candidates in priority constituencies across the South East region to discuss our policies and we are looking from somebody to help us set up and run these meetings. We are also reviewing our list of professional contacts, including MPs, and we would like to set up a new system that will allow us to access these contacts efficiently.
During your internship, your task is to help the RSPB’s general election campaign in the South East region, which will involve:
Setting up meetings with Parliamentary candidates
Drafting briefing notes on RSPB
Preparing briefing notes on candidates
Writing reports of meetings for the regional office and the national Government Affairs team.
Writing follow up letters to candidates
Liaising with HQ Government Affairs department over attendance at meetings
Organising at least one hustings event in the South East Region
Researching contact details for candidates
Researching interests of candidates
Researching and updating existing regional contact lists
You'll gain valuable work experience, develop new skills and learn how one of Europe's largest conservation charities is run. This role offers you the excellent opportunity to gain first hand experience of dealing with the constituency offices of Parliamentary candidates and MPs. It is also a great chance to learn about environmental policy and its impact on wildlife, and have the opportunity to work with, and learn from, the RSPB’s specialist Government Affairs team.
You’ll be able to visit RSPB nature reserves and see how we use them to promote and influence policy.
Your input will help the RSPB secure a better future for wildlife with the next Government.
You'll also get:
training on CV writing and interview techniques
access to our internal vacancies during your internship
a reference on successful completion of your internship
a dedicated mentor will monitor your progress and help with personal development throughout the internship.
Doing an internship will not guarantee you a job with the RSPB. Our internships are designed to offer work experience. However, interns can apply to our paid vacancies, including those only advertised internally. For obvious reasons an intern would need to have proven themselves in their current role, before expecting their volunteering experience to assist in an application to a paid post.
Time commitment: A minimum 3 days week (9am – 5pm, with a possibility of some out-of-hours working on occasion) for
6 months, extending to 9 months, if flexibility allowed. Start date 15th March 2010.
The post will be based at the South East Regional Office in Brighton.
