  • 30160/Team Leader/Director, for U8 Global Student Partnership for Development
    Location: London
    Salary: None
Posted on 9 June 2011, closes on 20 June 2011

The U8 is a non-partisan platform, enabling students from around the world to discuss some of the most pressing issues of our generation. It was founded as a reaction to the 2005 G8 summit, where a small group of countries seemed to set the development agenda. We believe that those affected by global poverty should have the strongest voice in discussing development issues.

We’ve previously brought students from across Europe, South and Central Asia, Africa as well as Central America together to discuss development issues in person with a view to engaging policy makers and the media. Our summits in Warwick and Cambridge brought the student voice to the attention of governments and the world’s media, including the Guardian and Hindu.

But 2011 sees our most ambitious project to date: we want students from all around the world to be able to participate in a truly global conversation – not just a few hundred. And so in November 2011 we’ll have the first U8 online summit, enabling thousands of students from around the world to share ideas and perspectives with each other.

    Team Leader and Director roles

We’re looking for experienced students and recent graduates with a strong track record of running student societies, events or with relevant work experience to take up Team Leader roles in the organisation. Working on average at least 20 hours a week over the summer and potentially until December, you will have a high degree of autonomy and be responsible for a specific function, reporting to the relevant Director on the Executive Committee. For truly exceptional candidates we may consider Director roles.

As well as an interest in international development and helping the U8 achieve its aims, we are particularly interested in applicants with an interest or any experience or skills in at least one of the following:

    • Language skills (French, Spanish, Arabic and Mandarin/Cantonese in particular)
    • Technology – website design or functionality, videoconferencing, technological capacity in developing countries
    • Running student societies
    • Event management
    • Marketing strategy
    • Design and marketing – both the creative side as well as account management
    • Fundraising and corporate social responsibility
    • Media, communications and public relations
    • Consultancy, including managing change and systemic analysis

We are also very interested to hear from current students interested in linking their university societies to the U8 and participating in the global online summit.

Our past interns and members of the Executive Committee have gone on to work for international organisations such as the UN, civil service fast streams in developed and developing countries, charities, management consultancies and think tanks, as well as academia. We have a strong track record of developing our volunteers' skills and preparing them for careers in the public, private and third sector.

The roles would be based from home, although there may be occasional meetings in London: as a global organisation we believe geography should not be a barrier to helping us grow, but that doesn’t mean we won’t expect as much effort from you.

    Contact:

To apply, please send a CV, a short covering letter setting out your experience and skills and what you can offer the U8 to recruitment@u8development.org

  • 30140/Work Experience - Trainee Researchers or Policy Officers, for The Consultation Institute
    Location: Biggleswade, Bedfordshire
    Salary: Unpaid Work Experience
Posted on 9 June 2011, closes on 24 June 2011

    High-value experience in a unique not-for-profit organisation.

The Consultation Institute holds a unique position in the increasingly important area of Consultation. Established in 2004, it is the leading provider of public engagement training for civil servants, local government officers, Councillors and countless other professionals. It is also the only organisation of its kind that delivers accreditation services in  promoting best practice in an area where standards are often ignored.

The Consultation Institute focuses on all aspects of public engagement and stakeholder dialogues and therefore becomes involved in a wide range of politically-contentious issues.

The work experience assignments will be for 4 months and based at the Institute’s Centre of Excellence at Biggleswade, Bedfordshire (40 minutes from London Kings Cross, 5 mins from the A1)

Successful applicants can expect exposure to a range of consultation exercises, analysing their effectiveness and conformance to standards. Projects will include research preparation for training courses, seminars, roundtables and other Institute programme related items. Subjects of current interest include:-

    • Deficit reduction & public expenditure consultations
    • Renewable and other energy-related consultations
    • Energy from Waste (Incinerators)
    • Major infrastructure projects & public engagement (nuclear, High-speed2 etc)
    • Health & Social Care – consultations on Government reform plans
    • Impact of the Localism Bill

    Sample Projects

Trainees under supervision will be allocated a Topic area, and will gather public domain information about public engagement and consultation exercises that are relevant. This may include building a database of recent or current initiatives and may include on-going monitoring of selected consultations. Inevitably, this will oblige trainees to become very familiar with key public policy issues and their evolution. We may therefore ask trainees to contact Government departments and stakeholders as part of their research.

Data, once assembled, may be used in Briefing Papers, Topic Reports or Power Point presentations. It is hoped that trainees may have opportunities to present to selected audiences either at the Biggleswade Centre or at events the Institute regularly organises throughout the UK.

The Institute is led by renowned, authoritative and respected experts in the field of Consultation and is therefore, a great place to learn.  It is developing its services in the public, private or third sectors, and is working to a strategic plan that includes international expansion.  Career prospects in the medium term, are therefore, excellent and the Board is seriously “talent-spotting” for the future.

After four months, we expect Trainees to have learnt:-

    • The complex landscape of public engagement in the UK and how to research it
    • How to analyse consultation exercises.
    • Basic Report-writing and presentation preparation
    • Working in a best-practice Institute

Ideal candidates will be of graduate or equivalent standard, have a strong interest in current affairs, and be incurably inquisitive and able to work quickly and accurately. Excellent verbal and written communications are important, as is familiarity with online technologies ... and a well-developed sense of humour is essential!

    Contact:

Candidates should express their interest in being selected for these positions, by emailing a one page application giving details of their name, address, phone and email contacts, and their qualifications already obtained and/or their current course of study. In addition, and in no more than three paragraphs, the reasons why you are the ideal candidate for one of the available opportunities.

  • 30087/Communications & Research Volunteer (3 months), for FairPensions
    Location: London
Salary: Reasonable transport costs & lunch
Posted on 6 June 2011, closes on 17 June 2011

An opportunity to acquire experience within a charity which campaigns to highlight business practices that are negligent or harmful to people or the environment, and catalyses action to change them.

FairPensions seeks to harness the shareholder power of large investors to target transnational corporations on their environmental and human rights impacts. The massive sums at the disposal of investors such as pension funds means that they can use their shareholder influence to (for example) reduce greenhouse gas emissions or secure better pay and working conditions for workers – but many are failing to do so. FairPensions is changing this.

Our voluntary roles provide an opportunity for individuals who wish to combine practical experience of campaigns with research and analysis. We will work hard to ensure that you have clear, structured projects to suit your interests and develop your skills, although you will also be involved in a variety of activities arising on an ad hoc basis.

The role will be varied but tasks are likely to include:

    • Research current environmental and social issues for new FairPensions’ campaigns
    • Regular media monitoring for press coverage and any relevant developments
    • Assisting with drafting of press releases and other press work
    • Managing FairPensions’ online presence on various social networking sites
    • Helping to improve and maintain the FairPensions website
    • Campaigns and fundraising administration

The position is based in FairPensions’ office near London Bridge. Working hours are flexible but you would ideally volunteer for three or four days a week, for three months, starting at the end of June. FairPensions will pay for reasonable transport costs and lunch.

    Applications

Please email your CV and a covering letter showing how you meet the aspects outlined in the bullet points below to matthew.butcher@fairpensions.org.uk by 4pm on Friday 17th June 2011. Interviews will take place during the week beginning 20th June. Make sure your cover letter clearly explains your interests and the skills you would bring to the role. Don't be afraid to show your enthusiasm!

    • Interest in environmental and/or human rights issues
    • Desire to gain campaigning and communications experience in the third sector
    • Internet savvy (e.g. experience using social media)
    • Ability to carry out internet-based research
    • Enjoy taking on responsibility and working independently
    • Knowledge of Responsible Investment and/or Corporate Social Responsibility (helpful but not required)
    • Enthusiastic and willing to roll up your sleeves to get the work done

No prior work experience is required. We also, however, welcome applications from more experienced individuals who are seeking a change in career direction. We value diversity and welcome applications from all sections of the community. We are proud of the fact that previous volunteers have gone on to excellent jobs in areas including charities and NGOs, consulting, research and investment.

The Philosophy Shop is an educational charity committed to developing autonomous learning and critical and creative thinking through philosophy. By developing these aspects of a child's education we aim to inspire, motivate and teach children from all economic backgrounds to love learning.

We believe that philosophical enquiry, both in the development of reasoning and creative thinking, and in the exploration of central questions such as 'how should we live?' or 'how do we decide what to believe?', is crucially important to education.   Philosophy develops the art of learning to learn - an ability essential to children entering the now ever-changing world.  We want to encourage more thoughtful and reflective children enabling them to participate in society more independently.

We do this by training and supporting philosophy graduates to facilitate philosophical enquiries in primary and secondary schools in order to develop higher-order thinking and the application of this thinking to the world around them.  We also work with teachers to support the development of good practice and to make our work more sustainable.

We are looking for a bright confident intern to join our team and co-ordintate the specialists and schools that we work with as well as supporting the programme director.  The position is currently for 3 months, unpaid but with the possibility of the position being extended and becoming paid in the future.  We are a small charity which will give the intern opportunities for a wide range of skill development and personal input.

    Responsibilities:

    -> Co-ordinate specialists.
        •    Keep in regular contact with all the specialists, for feedback on any difficulties or problems they are having with their sessions or with the schools.

        •    Get feedback making sure they are happy with the specialist, discuss any problems/difficulties.

-> Approach schools about running philosophy sessions

-> Put together proposals for schools

    -> Assist programme director

The person applying for this position will need to be highly organised and have good administration, communication and people skills.
