Secretaries' and Assistants' Council

Patron: The Speaker of the House of Commons

The Secretaries’ Council was set up in 1972 with "Assistants’" added to the title in 1976 in acknowledgement of their growing numbers.   We work on an all party basis, acting as a channel between Members, Officers of the House and those secretaries and assistants who are members of the Council.

SAAC is recognised by the House of Commons as furthering the interests of Staff and over the years has achieved many improvements in working conditions for Members’ Staff as well as holding cultural and social events.  It was a result of lobbying by SAAC that led to the introduction of pensions for Members Staff some years ago.

Council Meetings, which are open to all members, are held four times a year in different venues around the Parliamentary estate.

We organise many parties, social events and visits, both inside and outside the Houses of Parliament.

Membership is open to everyone working for a Member of Parliament, including staff members working in constituency offices.  Membership is £1 per year.
