Letter to MPs' Staff Added 17 June 2008 Dear Your Union If you aren’t already a member of the union that represents the staff of MPs, the T&GWU (Unite) Parliamentary Staff Branch, I hope you will join today. I have enclosed a membership form; click here to access it [PDF file 613KB] The branch provides individual advice to members and runs campaigns to improve pay and working conditions, health and safety and facilities to assist us in providing a public service. In addition, the branch also hosts social events and monthly meetings. 2008 will be an important year for us: The review of members’ allowances is likely to lead to changes in the way we are employed. The branch has an official role to play in the review, and we will ensure that your views are represented. We have a track record of success on pay – including the ‘ring-fencing’ of staffing allowances and the inflation-proofed increases to the allowance. We will be campaigning to improve the redundancy package for members so that you can be confident that should you lose your job at the next election, you will be looked after. Most importantly, we are there for our members to help resolve disputes. If the relationship between an MP and staff member breaks down, which unfortunately happens more often than you might think, the union can provide professional help. In 2008 we aim to improve the consultation rights we have as a branch on matters such as terms and conditions. EDM 1057, which backs this campaign, already has nearly 100 signatures, and shows we have MPs on our side. But to make this campaign work we need our membership to grow. Please join the union today, because it is only united that we can make 2008 the best year for staff rights. If you would like to talk to a member of the Executive Committee about any aspect of the work of the branch, please email me and we can arrange a telephone call or if you are based in Parliament, a chat over a coffee. If you are a member of another Unite branch (or another union), please let us know and we will amend our records. Yours sincerely,
