Dealing with the Media

Duration: ONE DAY

Increasingly in our lives we are called upon to deal with the media. Immediate messages are now sent out into the world and people can sometimes forget the impact that a small remark or a simple throw away comment can make. This session is designed to help participants to understand the importance of stating your clear message confidently which could be heard by the media and therefore the world at large.

Who should attend?

People who are starting to communicate more regularly through the media and those wishing to enhance their radio/camera presenting skills.

Objectives

  • How to overcome mental blocks and appear more professional

  • How to tailor your message to ensure greater coverage

  • How to appear relaxed and confident

  • How to dress and create the right impression

  • How to eradicate verbal tics and distracting gestures

  • How to improve your style and on-air presence

  • How to conduct yourself before, during and after an interview (with ‘live interview experience)

Course Outline

Understanding the media: What do the media want? Why have you been asked to give this interview? What is the context of this media request? Understanding these simple questions will assist in the preparation and delivery of your message.

Coping with difficult situations: Simple techniques will be explored to assist in coping with fear and doubts. Dealing in a pressurised environment and sticking to the message. Understanding how to be persuasive and developing great presence.

Voice Skills: Utilise the 3 Vs of communication to your advantage. Tonal, pitch, word emphasis, articulations, stammering, stuttering, and aural punctuation.

Body Language and Appearance: What to wear to enhance self-confidence. Using gestures effectively. Learning to control the environment and choose the setting to create the right atmosphere physically, emotionally and psychologically.

Response Structuring: How to structure a response when having to cope with open, closed, leading and assumptive questioning. Showing empathy and human awareness while extending the information that the interviewer is giving you. This section will have an element of ‘live broadcast’ to allow all participants to experience a media interview in a safe learning environment.
