Jane, Edna, Helen and other family and close friends - I can only begin to imagine how shocked and cheated you must all be feeling... Ian will always remain in my thoughts as the generous, patient, attentive, unassuming, deep, thoughtful man whom I first met when we worked together in 1980. He was always exactly the same when we met from time to time over subsequent years - even after long breaks - but the smile and laugh were always just waiting to emerge. Upholding you in our thoughts Kit & Shellie

I miss him a lot.. but also happy that he died in a place he was happy in and enjoyed. And he did so many good things in the last year, living life fully: dancing salsa, learning Spanish, skiing, travelling to the Mediterranean, to Pyrinees, Cuba, Belgium, Amsterdam. He loved art and was beginning to paint well and enjoyed going to the Vermeer exhibition in London. In fact we almost went to New York one weekend for the last day of the Barcelona exhibition but that was a bit crazy so didn't! So a celebration of life! Thank you everyone who has texted me, phoned, sent kind messages and given amazing support! Jane

To Jane and Ian's family - I was at STH with Ian and Jane in the mid 1970s: a very happy time within a small Medical School and it's difficult to believe it was nearly 30 years ago. Jane and Ian were in contact at the time of the last reunion - and sent a photograph as they could not attend. We all commented on their youthful appearence and joie de vivre! I shall remember a charming, kind and intelligent man. I send my deepest sympathy to you all. Buddy (Bernadette) Butler

Ian was a pleasure to work alongside. He had a wicked sense of humour and loved a "good gossip". As a Cardiology secretary (Dr Gwilt), he never looked down on anyone and treated everyone as an equal, as a colleague. Latterly he treated my husband, and I was interested a an NHS employee, to hear about Ian's wonderful bedside manner and how he took the time to explain everything about my husband's condition and treatment in great detail and with great patience. On Cardiology nights out, he was the life and soul of the party, both when he attended alone and with his wife, Jane. I cannot stop thinking how tragic it is to not see him on the corridor anymore, to stop and have a good old chinwag. He always made time for others. He will be sorely missed, not only by his colleagues and friends, but also his patients. Joan Callan, Medical Secretary

We have many fond memories of Ian at medical school and of the times that we spent together when we shared a room [David] and a house in Brixton {David +Bun},One of which is Ian's capacity for fun and his ability to obtain a 1st in Physiology whilst lying in bed having great thoughts, we realised we were in the presence of a bright chap. The last time we met was whilst hearing the May sung in from the top of Magdalen tower .He was an excellent cardiologist bringing compassion ,knowledge and science to his practice. I barely knew Dr Mulligan - yet I was truly saddened to hear of his untimely death. I had rather anticipated that I would come to know him better as his patient. He was only a four years older than me. Through people like me, I hope his family, his friends, and his colleagues will derive comfort of his lasting legacy: the cardiac catheter laboratory at Milton Keynes - and the many lives he will have improved and helped prolong. Only last December, the machinery helped him diagnose the extent of my own hitherto unknown coronary artery disease. I ended up with a bypass operation in Oxford 2 days after the angiogram. I will be forever grateful to him and remember his last piece of advice to me, "do plenty of exercise, and, if the budget runs to it, enjoy a glass of red wine every day". I try to. May he rest in peace. DK (a grateful patient).

We were very sad to hear of Ian's death and would like to send our best wishes and condolences to all of his family. What fantastic person Ian was, a great sense of humour, amazingly clever and very down to earth. Surachai worked in the same lab with Ian in Oxford, and we realised another connection because I'd lived in Radyr till I was 18. In fact I think Ian's Mum taught my older sister. Some time after leaving Oxford, Surachai reconnected with Ian by email from San Francisco and they started a game of email chess. Finally, Ian declared victory but check mate didn't seem to have happened at our end, and they realised that somewhere along the line there'd been a mistake and they were playing completely different boards. After that our paths didn't cross again, which is a great shame. We are very lucky to have known Ian. Judy Rees & Surachai Supattapone
